Teaching

Adrienne teaches privately in Charlottesville, Staunton, and Richmond, and is also available for lessons in Harrisonburg, VA. She also teaches at James Madison University, and will be holding auditions in early 2008.

Private Lessons

Adrienne offers private instruction for ages 7 and up, for any skill level or ability. Prrevious piano experience is a plus, but not required. Having harp lessons with a new teacher takes time, patience, and an open mind. An initial harp lesson is always important, but often not enough time to understand how the student-teacher relationship will develop. Three lessons would be the minimum and most efficient amount of time to get acquainted.teach pic 4

Interested in lessons? After scheduling a lesson with Ms. Wager, download a New Student Form and bring it completed to your intial lesson.

Method

Adrienne plays and teaches the Salzedo method, developed by legendary harpist and composer, Carlos Salzedo. Salzedo revolutionized harp technique, and created a new method emphasizing aesthetics, musicality, and relaxation.

teach pic 4As quoted by Salzedo in the article Modern Harp Technique: "Music is meant to be heard, but also to be looked at… Like the orchestral conductor, the harpist must learn how to externalize music."

Having a solid approach to technique not only encourages musical advancement, it diminishes physical problems. The benefits of having a solid foundation (harp technique) are a feeling of self-control, confidence, and relaxation. Without these components, our bodies can easily fail us. As harpists, we are all susceptible to all sorts of pain- no matter what technique we learn. Early recognition and prevention are the most important steps in keeping our bodies in shape, especially as time and age takes its toll.

Playing the harp is a very rewarding profession. There are endless cycles of gratification that only seem increase with time and commitment. As those who have taught me have given me so much to be thankful for, I hope to pass on my inspiration to others.
